Rev. Thomas Gillespie was born in Janesville, Wisconsin. He attended high school at Queen of Apostles Seminary in Madison (1960-1964). He then attended college at Holy Name Seminary in Madison (1965). He then graduated from St. Francis Seminary in Milwaukee with an emphasis in Philosophy and Theology (1966-1972).

Rev. Gillespie was ordained into the priesthood by Bishop Cletus O'Donnell at St. Raphael Catherdral in Madison on May 12, 1972.
