EAA Campers Note CAMP SCHOLLER TO OPEN GATES ON JUNE 24 --- Beginning this year, EAA opens EAA AirVenture Camp Scholler 31 days prior to opening day, instead of the traditional July 1. That means campers who like to get in early can do so beginning June 24. This new format helps would-be campers plan since the campground's opening day will always be on a Friday, not mid-week as is usually the case. Camp Scholler is open to all EAA members. http://www.airventure.org/2005/news/050204_scholler_dates.html FAA PLANS TO CANCEL 500 REDUNDANT NDB APPROACHES The FAA wants to reduce the number of under-used nondirectional radio beacon (NDB) approaches to devote more resources to developing satellite-based GPS-WAAS approaches, which deliver better all-weather access, vertical guidance, and lower minimums than conventional nonprecision approaches. "This move reflects how people are flying today and will be flying in the future," said AOPA President Phil Boyer. "Pilots oncefound their way by following signal fires; today we have GPS. Phasingout little-used approaches is part of the natural evolution of GA."The FAA would like to cancel NDB procedures (but not shut down thenavigation aids themselves) to runway ends already served by an area navigation (RNAV) procedure (GPS or GPS-WAAS) and another ground-based navigation aid (VOR, localizer, or LDA). The money saved will be applied to the development of new GPS-WAAS approaches. The FAA has assured AOPA that airports won't lose approaches that are still used frequently and is looking for pilot and airport manager input on what approaches aren't being used. See AOPA Online for a list of procedures under considerationfor cancellation( http://www.aopa.org/whatsnew/newsitems/2005/050214ndb.html )
